The Amboseli National park is located in Southern Kenya and covers an area of 392 square kilometers. It is one of Kenya’s most popular parks and it name comes from a Maasai word which means “salty dust”. It was declared a national reserve in 1968 and later became a national park in 1974. It has a blended topography of acacia woodlands, plains, swamps, rocky thorn bush and marshes.

Amboseli is one of the best places in Africa to view elephants and other wild animals at close range and is ideal for nature lovers to explore different habitats such as wetlands with accompanying Sulphur springs, savannah and woodlands and the dried up Lake Amboseli bed. Besides that, you may also get to visit and mingle with the local Maasai community that lives close by and experience a thing or two about their culture.

Amboseli’s maximum average daily temperature is 33 degrees Celsius and its minimum average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius.

Drought is prevalent in this area due to the high temperatures and little annual rainfall of 300mm, which falls during the months of April, May, November and December.

How do you get there?

There are two ways to get there: by road and by air.

By road: The most popular route to access the park is through the Nairobi-Namanga route, on the Nairobi- Arusha road, via the Meshanani Gate. Another alternative route is from Nairobi through Emali on the Nairobi-Mombasa road, through Tsavo West National Park, through the Olkelunyiet Gate.
